Manchester United F.C. (England).

  • Formation (1878–1902):

They were established in 1878 under the name of Newton Heath LYR F.C. by the railway workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot. The club in 1902 was rescued by local beer maker John Henry Davies who re-named it Manchester United, following financial difficulties.

  • Early Success (1908–1945):

In 1908, United became champions of the league and in 1909 they won the FA Cup. Their legendary stadium Old Trafford was launched in 1910. The club has weathered both good and bad times including financial difficulties and destruction of the stadium during World War II.

  • The Busby Era (1945–1969):

Sir Matt Busby made United a force. The club had a reputation of developing young talent (the Busby Babes), and won league titles in the 1950s. But tragedy hit with the Munich Air Disaster (1958) that killed 23 people including eight players. Busby reformed the team and United became the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968.

  • The Post-Busby Years (1970s–1980s):

The club was experiencing a weak position and lack of performance in the league but was still competitive in domestic cups and won the FA Cup in 1977, 1983, and 1985.

  • The Ferguson Era (1986–2013):

Sir Alex Ferguson opened the golden era at United. He created a dynasty after a sluggish beginning, winning 13 titles of the Premier League, 5 of the FA Cup, two titles of the UEFA champions League (1999 and 2008) and the notorious Treble in 1999. In 2013 Ferguson retired and he left a legendary legacy.

  • Post-Ferguson Era (2013–Present):

When Ferguson retired, United could no longer keep pre-eminence. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær were mixed managers. The club continued to win trophies, such as the 2016 FA Cup, 2017 EFL Cup and the 2017 Europa League, but has failed to regain its overall domination in the leagues.
