Origins & Launch

  • February 2005 – YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, former PayPal employees.
  • April 23, 2005 – The first video, “Me at the Zoo” (by Jawed Karim), was uploaded.
  • November 2005 – Sequoia capital invested 3.5 million thus giving the YouTube its initial big funding.

Rise to Popularity

  • December 2005 – YouTube officially launched to the public.
  • 2006 – Exploded in popularity thanks to viral videos like “Lazy Sunday” (SNL skit). By July 2006, 65,000 videos were being uploaded daily.
