The Blood moon lunar eclipse 2025 will be observed in India and half of the world on the 7-8th of September 2025. Learn when and how to watch, as well as livestream and photography tips to use with this rare celestial event.
An amazing sight of the Blood Moon total lunar eclipse.
What’s Happening?
- The entire eclipse of the Moon will fall on the evening of the 7th of September, but on the night, when our world passes exactly between the Sun and the Moon that is, on the night when the Sun and Moon are exactly opposite to each other that shadow will spread over the world of the most perverse colour, of a copper-red colour.
- The overall lunar eclipse will be the longest eclipse since 2022, with totality times lasting about 82 minutes, and the entire performance lasting over 5 hours.
Where & When to Watch (in India)
You are lucky if you are in Patna–or in India–at all:
- The eclipse will be completely visible in India.
- It begins at 8.58 PM IST (moons first enters its thin penumbral shadow), then moves to partial at 9:57 PM, followed by the total eclipse at around 11:00 pm and reaching its maximum at 11:41 pm. The moon with the red colouring is visible till about 2.25 AM IST.
- The last complete lunar eclipse that can be seen in India this year; the next will be seen in March 2026.
These popular observations with telescopes and explanatory collections will be conducted in those cities as Pune and Madurai. In Madurai they are the viewing at the Thaikkal-Sellur bridge, in Pune, a free public session is being held in the Jyotirvidya Parisanstha.
Global Visibility
- Most of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Australia will see the entire eclipse, with Western Europe only seeing a partial one, at moonrise.
- Unluckily, North and South America will miss on this event, because they will be on the day side of the event.
- But the good news of those areas is that the next Blood Moon will happen in North America on March 2–3, 2026.
Why the Moon Turns Red
In a total lunar eclipse, there is no sunlight that reaches the earth because the sunlight is filtered by the atmosphere. The smaller (blue) wavelengths scatter off, and the longer (red and orange) wavelengths wrap around the Earth, and light up the Moon.
What’s Next?
- What a delight to the stargazers this weekend—Blood Moon! Should there be any cloud problems, you can see it anytime, anywhere on livestreams (like those at the Virtual Telescopes Project).
- This eclipse is the start of a heavenly phase-another partial eclipse of the sun will take place on September 21, 2025.
- Some of the signs appear to be feeling the energy of change and emotion-breeches, especially in the lives of some zodiac signs, which astrologers have predicted.
