Liverpool FC

Founding and Early Years (1892–1959)

A dispute between the owner of Anfield and the manager of the Everton FC led to the formation of Liverpool FC in 1892. Everton transferred to Goodison Park and Houlding developed a new team – Liverpool FC. The club has shot to the top and in 1901, the club won its first league title. By the 1920s, Liverpool had already won a number of First Division titles and placed itself among the big guns in English football.

The years that followed the war were not very consistent, but when Bill Shankly became the manager in 1959, luck changed. Shankly not only modernized the team but also reconstructed Anfield and established the foundations of the famous Liverpool culture surrounding the so-called Boot Room, where coaching personalities helped to create continuity and even a certain sense of tactical innovation.

Golden Era (1960s–1980s)

  • Liverpool won English and European football under Shankly, Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan.
  • During 1973-1990, club won 11 league titles and during the same period 4 times the European Cup (1977, 1978, 1981, 1984).
  • Stars such as Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush and Alan Hansen characterised a period of domination.
  • Liverpool was equated with tactic, attacking, and a fanatically devoted crowd, the Kop.

There were also tragedies during this time – the Heysel Stadium tragedy (1985) and the Hillsborough tragedy (1989), both of which severely wounded the club and its fans.

Decline and Struggles (1990s–2000s)

Liverpool has been in a long spell of decline after their last league title way back in 1990.

  • Other competitors such as Manchester United and Arsenal became prominent during the era of the premier league.
  • Liverpool has been making ends meet, however, with domestic cups and the 2001 treble (FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup) under Gérard Houllier.
  • The best part was in 2005, when the team of Rafael Benitez created the miracle of the Istanbul comeback, beating AC Milan at the final of the Champions League.

But misfortune extinguished in its development its future greatness, processes of changeability within the ranks of managers and a matter of inner uncertainty of strategy wherein clung the bands of variable performance.

Klopp Revolution (2015–Present), Modern Era.

This was a new dawn with the appointment of Juergen Klopp in 2015. Klopp also brought his own style of play, known as gegenpressing, or high intensity, pressing and rapid transitions.

  • Liverpool has won the 2019 UEFA champions league (beating Tottenham Hotspur).
  • In 201920, they finally won the Premier League after 30 years with 99 points.
  • Other achievements were the FA Cup (2022), EFL Cup (2022), UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Liverpool proved to be back as one of the most intimidated teams in Europe with such stars as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mané, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
