  1. Fired as Britain Ambassador to the U.S.

Peter Mandelson has been sacked by the UK Government following new revelations in his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, as his Ambassador to the U.S., by his Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.

  1. Emails and revelations

This was after emails and letters dating back to 2000s were leaked in which Mandelson stated:

o Calling Epstein “my best pal.”

o Recommending early release of Epstein who was convicted in 2008.

o And Mandelson had also, it was stated, indicated the first conviction of Epstein as having been false and to be appealed. This was a revelation as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said that this was new information which has altered what was at the time when Mandelson was appointed.

  1. Political fallout

o Strong Parliamentary and media criticism has occurred. Epstein has been called as being sick and disturbing by some ministers in reference to the messages contained by Mandelson.

o Questions are being asked as to why the vetting (of the ambassador position) failed to uncover these issues, or why, assuming they did, they failed to preclude the appointment.

o Downing Street and Keir Starmer have justified the original due process, but now believe that the new and disclosed material is material and legally distinct to revoke the ambassadorship of Mandelson.

  1. Immediate consequences

o Mandelson has immediately resigned as ambassador.

o James Roscoe is an interim ambassador who is also a career diplomat.
